The Coves Sunset by Footsore Fotography
I shared this photo 13 years ago, but it really felt like I needed to return here this morning, if only for a virtual moment.
Gary has been a part of Michigan in Pictures for years now, bringing photos from across Michigan, but especially Grand Marais & the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. View & purchase his work at Footsore Photography & for sure follow Gary on Facebook! The first two below are from The Coves along with a collection including Lower Mosquito Falls in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore & the last is from the upcoming Grand Marais Fly-in!

The sun’s brush paints the day’s end with strokes of flowing orange and opalescent coral. Sleeping Bear Dunes, guardian of the coast, stand silhouetted against the celestial masterpiece. As the sun descends, the waters of North Bar Lake become a mirror, reflecting the heavens in all their fiery glory. A ribbon of liquid cuts through the sand, mirroring the sky’s vibrant hues. The wet sand, kissed by the setting sun, flows with ethereal light, a testament to the sun’s final performance. The air, still and hushed, is filled with the gentle lapping of waves against the shore, a soothing melody that accompanies the visual symphony.
Mark Lindsay from The Soul of Sleeping Bear
Leelanau.com shares that photographer Mark Lindsay (whose work you may have seen on Michigan in Pictures) has released his first book, The Soul of Sleeping Bear. It’s a beautiful, coffee table book that blends Mark’s gorgeous photography of the Sleeping Bear with writings on what these vistas can spark in your heart.

Pothole Lighthouse by Tim Webb
Our friends at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association share: And now for something completely different: A new initiative to highlight the problem of potholes. Lighthouses are being trialled at night to warn unsuspecting motorists.
😆 No lies detected! See more of the great pics they share in our Michigan in Picture group on Facebook & for sure visit their website to learn more about this champion for Great Lakes heritage!
I don’t think the lighthouse above is based on a Michigan one, so here’s a shot of Point Betsie on Lake Michigan GLLKA shared recently by Ross Ellet! More funny business on Michigan in Pictures.

Halloween Sunset by Nicole Wamsley
Nicole took this way back in 2010 before a haunted hayride but it remains a top 10 all time Halloween vibe photo for me! See more horses & other animals in her Fauna gallery on Flickr.

Slow Burn Sunset in Muskegon by Walter E. Elliott
mLive meteorologist Mark Torregrossa shares that a large plume of wildfire smoke will be impacting our weather (and sunsets) over the weekend:
While it looks like a dry weekend that should be sunny, there will likely be areas of high-level wildfire smoke. The exact timing of the smoke will be difficult. It does look like some time Saturday will have a thick blanket of smoke high in the sky. It won’t mean much to the big picture of the weather other than keeping our temperatures out of the high-80s.
One thing is sure this weekend. Our humidity will be fairly low. We can see that with the morning low temperatures. Saturday morning we will drop into the 50s.
I think I can live with that forecast!!
Walter took this photo last Saturday. Follow his Facebook for more and view & purchase his work on his website.
This photo was the second most popular photo of 2024 on Michigan in Pictures!!

Turnip Rock at sunset by Tom Clark
Tom shares that Turnip Rock is a beautiful, wondrous land formation off the coast near Port Austin:
The gigantic stone developed its signature look after millennium of being worn away by waves thumping across its bow. After being separated from the mainland in prehistoric times, Turnip Rock is an island inhabited by some trees and very little else.
Turnip Rock was one of twenty finalists in the 2013 “Seven Wonders of Michigan” contest sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and the Lansing State Journal, but it wasn’t selected as one of the final ten.
He took this back in July of 2014. See more in his Lake – Water gallery on Flickr and for sure head over to his website to view & purchase his work!
PS: Head over to the post on Facebook for another angle on Turnip Rock by Tom & a 1906 pic!!

The Summer Solstice happens today (June 20th) at 4:51pm. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice is the moment when the sun reaches its highest and northernmost point in the sky. In addition to being the moment that summer officially begins, it also happens on the longest day of the year.
Kent took this in Charlevoix on the solstice in 2019. See his latest shots on his Flickr!

Saturday Sunset in Frankfort by SueFi Photography
Memorial Weekend 2024 is upon us. I’m wishing a great time for everyone, safe travels lucky enough to be traveling for pleasure, and for all of us, I wish patience. If you look around you will see Help Wanted signs everywhere you look, particularly in hot tourist destinations. Give those working an extra dose of kindness & have a blast!
To help folks enjoy the roads, the state has lifted some road closures for the weekend. We’ll need those roads because AAA Michigan is expecting nearly 1.3 million Michigan residents will travel at least 50 miles or more from home, second most since they began tracking in 1999.
Sue shared this photo last weekend – head over to SueFi Photography for lots more great shots from Frankfort & elsewhere in Michigan!
