The Apple Tree in Winter by Allan L McFarlane
Today would have been my dad’s 83rd birthday. Though he’s been gone more of my life than he was in it, I still miss him every day. He was a hell of a photographer who sparked my lifelong passion for photography. While my scan of this photo of the apple tree in our backyard years ago isn’t the best, I had to share it.
Michigan Lights Up the New Year by CIMSS UW-Madison
This satellite photo from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin shows:
…two of the first 2021 images from the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 satellites when they flew over the U.S. overnight to acquire stunning VIIRS nighttime imagery with light from recently full moon (98% illumination). City lights shimmer in the wintry landscape while a large storm swirls in the Mississippi Valley. Including a zoom into the Great Lakes Region because there’s no place like home!

2020 Flooding in Midland Michigan by City of Midland

American White Pelicans expanding Michigan range
These American White Pelicans on Lake Huron by kare hav were the perfect photo for a story from the Great Lakes Echo about how these birds we associate with the tropics are becoming a more common sight.

The Loon Song Covered Bridge aka Joshua’s Crossing is a covered bridge in Lake Ann that was built in 1995 so that guests could access the back of the Herendeen Lake Resort property. The 90-foot bridge crosses a ravine and small creek and was named after Joshua Gabrick, son of resort owner Mark Gabrick. You can get more info about the privately owned bridge on their Facebook page. They’re also selling home sites in case you feel the need to drive across this on the regular!

Early Winter at Miners Falls by Michigan Nut Photography

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore explains that Miners Falls is where the Miners River drops about 50 feet over a sandstone outcrop, creating the park’s most powerful waterfall. Happy Solstice and Winter by Dale DeVries
The Winter Solstice which marks the beginning on winter in the Northern Hemisphere officially happened at 5:02 am this morning. As you may know, the two largest planets Jupiter & Saturn will appear at their closest point since 1623 and the closest observable conjunction since 1226 just after sunset this evening! Michigan weather being what it is, the likelihood of us being able to see it isn’t high, but we will have a chance to enjoy it for the next few evenings.
Dale took this photo on the winter solstice back in 2014. He says that he was overjoyed to find a Snowy Owl on my first trip out that winter – almost like a Christmas present! See more in his Best of West Lake gallery on Flickr & also follow Dale on Facebook for more.

I’ve always been fascinated by this biker bar on East Michigan, all alone on an empty sandlot. It’s the tough building that been in a lot of fights, and none of the other buildings want to be anywhere near it. And it doesn’t care. Still, the outdoor ashtray makes me smile – even at a biker bar they have rules, and one of those rules is that if you want to smoke you do it outside.
