Summertime Rolls

Lake Michigan Rolls

Untitled, photo by Noah Sorenson

There’s nowhere in Michigan that’s more than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes, and you can probably find a swimmable lake or river closer than that.

That’s something that I hope you’ll manage to do on this sweltering weekend – stay cool folks!

Noah took this on Monday at Elberta beach on Lake Michigan. Definitely check it out background bigalicious and see more northern Michigan goodness in his slideshow.

Simplicity – Sand and Stones

Michigan comes from the Chippewa language where “Michi-gama” means “great water” or “big lake”. With 3,126 miles of PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE Great Lakes shoreline and countless public beaches, there’s no excuse not to get out to beaches like the fabulous one at Grand Mere State Park near Stevensville in southwest Michigan this weekend!

Better Know a Michigan State Park: Port Crescent State Park edition

Port Crescent State Park

Port Crescent State Park, Michigan, photo by Zack Schindler

The Michigan DNR says that Port Crescent State Park:

…is located at the tip of Michigan’s “thumb” along three miles of sandy shoreline of Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. Some of the modern campsites offer a waterfront view, either of the Bay or the Old Pinnebog River channel. Port Crescent recently added a new camper cabin which sleeps six and has a scenic view of Saginaw Bay. A wooden boardwalk parallels the day-use shoreline offering many scenic vistas of Saginaw Bay. The park also offers excellent fishing, canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, birding, and hunting opportunities.

And see the map and book campsites here.

Pure Michigan launches “Winter 360” Tourism Initiative

Pure-Frozen-Michigan-April-1-2015

Pure Michigan announced an exciting new tourism initiative called Winter 360 today. Spokeswoman April Phule explained:

“We all know that ice cave tourism has been really a big deal for Michigan these past few winters, but of course as soon as it melts all those ice loving tourists head to places like Siberia, the Yukon and Pellston. Pure Michigan is focused on bringing as many people as possible to the state, so our staff decided to think outside the box.

We talked with the folks at Boeing and they are loaning us a fleet of six 757s that will be outfitted with 167 specially modified Frigidaire freezers. Each will generate approximately -87,000 BTUs, enough to blanket shorelines in ice while keeping the air at Michigan’s usual balmy summer temperatures. The planes will fly designated stretches of shoreline in Grand Haven, South Haven, Muskegon, Leelanau County, Saginaw Bay, Lake St. Clair and along Grand Island in the Upper Peninsula.

We’re calling it “Winter 360” and we expect it to add $37 million to Michigan’s economy this summer!

More as we learn it.

Waterproof

High on the list of “Things That I Want, Yet Somehow Don’t Have” is a waterproof camera. Lance does have one, the Nikon AW120, which is apparently not only waterproof, but also shockproof and freezeproof. Sounds like a ton of fun!

You’ll need a camera like this today on the Lakes as the winds are really whipping things up all across the state.

Life’s a Beach in Michigan

Glen Haven Dune Hike

I don’t think that enough is made of the fact that as long as you’re in Michigan, you are never more than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes. To make matters better, Michigan law permits you to freely walk the entire Great Lakes shoreline so get out and have some adventures this weekend!

About this photo, Jess writes: These images were taken on a hike on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Glen Haven MI roughly two years ago. Can’t recommend this hike enough! (I’m curious if any shipwreck remnants are still explorable with this year’s higher waterline.)

I’m curious too and will try to find out!
