ArtPrize '09 Friday

If you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered “Just how much money does it take for a city to completely go off its nut and turn into some kind of urban ninja butterfly?”

The answer, it seems, is about a million dollars. That’s how much money Rick DeVos allocated to found the Grand Rapids ArtPrize. The public will vote to determine who wins prizes including the top prize of $250,000!

Over on Absolute Michigan we’ve created the 2009 ArtPrize Grand Rapids page, an explosion of tweets, videos and (of course) photos.

Also check out the ArtPrize Map or (if you’re so inclined) fly through Grand Rapids and ArtPrize in Google Earth.

PS: Tomorrow Rob Bliss & friends will launch 100,000 paper airplanes over Monroe Ave. as a flashmob of musicians play. Be there.

Oh Beans! (Michigan Green Beans that is)

Oh Beans!

Oh Beans!, photo by Larry the Biker.

Taste the Local Difference says that although a 1/2 cup of green beans packs only 22 calories, it’s a great source of fiber and Vitamins A,C, K, folate, and manganese. I’m guessing that there’s a few more than 22 calories here but think of the manganese!

Larry took this photo of the green bean harvest in Ray Township (in Macomb County). Be sure to check it out bigger … and also what the truck looks like en route!

Like many lakes along the Lake Michigan shore, Silver Lake is a bay of the prehistoric Lake Nipissing that was closed in by coastal sand dunes. The Silver Lake Dunes Area’s fishing page says that Silver Lake is great fishing hole for Walleye, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Bluegill, and Black Crappie, while you enjoy the scenic beauty of the Sand Dunes. It’s part of Silver Lake State Park and you can see the view looking back at the lake from the air on Wikipedia.
