Power House Falls on the Fall River

GoWaterfalling.com says that Power House Falls is located on the Falls River:

It is the largest of many falls to be found on the aptly named river. The river is about 40 wide here and drops 15 feet. The falls is named for the old power house that stands next to it.

Reaching this waterfall is easy. From US-41 about 1 mile south of L’Anse head west on Power Dam Road. There is a sign for the falls. Follow the road for about a mile. When it crosses the train tracks it branches. There is another sign for the falls. There is a small park at the falls.

There are a number of small drops just above the falls, and there are supposed to be a dozen or so more between Power House Falls and the Middle Falls in L’Anse.

Kim says that yesterday she braved -19 degree windchills in Marquette to take photos and came across the Coast Guard practicing rescues. This photo shows five rescuers heading out to rescue two drowning victims. See some more photos of the Great Lakes’ most vital branch of the armed forces in action on the Marquette Coast Guard Facebook page.

Into the Icy Void at the Eben Ice Caves

Into the icy void

I know that winter is here when the searchers start showing up – 50 or 100 or more each day – for the Eben Ice Caves. In our first post on the Eben ice caves, Northern Michigan University professor Dr. John Anderton (who I got to know by chance this spring) explained that the Eben Ices Caves are located just a few miles north of the little town of Eben, within the Rock River Canyon Wilderness Area.

Within its interior there are two short user-developed trails (totaling about 1.75 miles) leading to Rock River Falls and the Eben Ice Caves. An estimated 1,700 people visit the area annually (USFS records) …

The Ice Caves are not true caves at all. They consist of walls or vertical sheets of ice that form across the face of overhanging rock outcrops. In the summer, small unimpressive waterfalls and groundwater seeps may found along the overhangs. In the winter, however, the water hits the cold air, drips downward under the influence of gravity and freezes, creating spectacular ice caves. Each winter they look a little different, but typically there are openings in the ice that allow you to walk behind the ice walls.

The rock overhangs, where the ice caves form, consist of outcrops of Munising Formation (Cambrian) with a capstone of AuTrain Formation (Ordovician). The outcrops are found along the south side of the valley of Silver Creek, which is part of a network of secondary glacial drainage channels that formed during the Marquette Advance (about 10,000 years ago). Theses secondary drainage channels flowed easterly into the AuTrain-Whitefish Channel, a primary glacial meltwater channel that flowed south to the Lake Michigan basin. Groundwater naturally seeps from these rocks, providing the water necessary to form the ice caves in the winter.

Check this out background big and definitely do not miss Anapko’s Eben Ice Caves slideshow which includes a lot of great, wallpaper sized views and also a sign with more about this incredible natural wonder!

Northern Lights of October 24, 2011 in Michigan

Marquette Northern Lights, October 24, 2011, photo by Shawn Malone / Lake Superior Photo

Last night Michigan was treated to an amazing show of Northern Lights as the skies exploded in red, green, white and even blues and yellows of the best display of the Aurora Borealis in years. Our Michigan Northern Lights Log and Flickr group lit up with photos and reports.

There were places you would expect – Marquette, the Keweenaw Peninsula, Escanaba – but also reports from literally EVERYWHERE in Michigan: Bath, Bellaire, Big Rapids, Blanchard, Clare, Charlotte, Charlevoix, Clark Lake, Coldwater Lake, East Leland, Frankfort, Fostoria, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Lapeer, Leland, Leelanau County, Lenawee County, Marquette, Mecosta, Mikado, Mulliken, Ottawa County, Onsted, Pontiac, Petoskey, Reading, Saginaw, Stockbridge, Tecumseh, Traverse City, Unionville, Whitehall & White Lake. People even checked in with reports from Pittsburgh, Indiana & Ohio.

Shawn took these shots last night near Marquette. She writes that she went back to the car to change lenses and the sky just lit up. Check the photo out bigger and see more stunning shots from last night in her jaw dropping northern lights of 10/24/11 set on Facebook! She’s got some with amazing reds.
