Sunrise, summer of 1983. In case you were wondering, Donnell Lake lies in central Cass County in southwest Michigan, 1 mile southeast of the town of Vandalia. The 4,659-acre watershed drains to Christiana Creek which flows south to the St. Joseph River. (DNR Fishery Report on the Donnell Lake)

Alan writes: Mead Creek State Forest Campground in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Late August 1993. It was already getting cold at night which led to the lovely mist over Mead Creek. Be sure to also check out his Michigan photos – lots of cool Michigan reptiles & amphibians!

On an unrelated note (unrelated because I was not at all clever about finding a photo that would make it related), the first-ever Water Festival, a celebration of water & music happens from noon to ? in Mackinaw City. If you’re nearby, check it out!

This photo of the Hotel Eddystone serves as the poster for Bobby Alcott’s show tomorrow night (Friday, Aug 18) at Karras Bros. Tavern in Detroit. The show is presented by Exposure.Detroit, a Motor City based photographer’s group that is part of the larger Exposure.Network.

You can get all the show details by clicking the poster below and I also encourage you to check out this interview with Bobby and this set of photos of the Hotel Eddystone. As a note to people who are sad that such a glorious building has fallen into such a state, the hotel is currently being renovated.

South Manitou Island

When I logged on briefly last night to see what photos had been added during the day. Just about the first thing I saw was this amazing photo of South Manitou Island from the air. In addition to the freighter, the photo clearly shows the beautiful natural harbor that made South Manitou an early Great Lakes settlement and the North Manitou Shoal lighthouse (aka “the Crib”). As much as I love the maritime history of the Manitou Passage, the coolest thing for me is that I very clearly recall hearing the plane fly past just after 6 PM on Sunday evening.

The photo is part of Daytrip to Mackinac Island, a set of photos that also includes photos of the Island, Straits of Mackinac, the Mackinac Bridge and Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Central Lake, Michigan … all week long in 1973

I guess we’ll continue yesterday’s “when we were younger than we are now” theme with today’s pic.

The photo is one of a large set that reminded me of a recent conversation with a friend who told me we can’t have any fun anymore – the world moves too fast and our work and free time are all tied together with email and cell phones and beeping reminders (or something like that). I don’t know if he’s right or not and I’m curious to know what you think so feel free to comment! (or just skip the comment and head out to do something fun and unwired). CAVE CANEM writes As a child, I was a big fan of those poorly lit, out of focus images in my Viewmaster toy. I used to just love my Boblo Island and 3d Casper Discs, I could stare at them for hours.

This is part of a great set of photos of people at Riverworks in Detroit and he notes that the photo is best viewed from childhood.

Sunrise at Harrisville Harbor

Sunrise at Harrisville Harbor, photo by jacalynsnana.

Michigan’s northeastern shore bills itself as the “Sunrise Side”, and this photo of dawn at the harbor of Harrisville, Michigan certainly illustrates why.
