Check out Tim’s awesomely amazing pictured rocks kayaking 2009 set (slideshow). He does a better job than anyone I’ve yet seen of conveying these massive rock formations.

Kayaking buffs will definitely want to check out the Hiawatha Water Trail web site – it’s a kayaker’s dream!!

Michigan in Pictures has much more about Pictured Rocks and you can also visit the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore web site.

Red Dawn: (re)Made in Michigan

Made in Michigan

The remake of the 1980s invasion film Red Dawn is being filmed in Mt. Clemens – one of many movies that are being shot in Michigan right now thanks to our industry leading film incentive. The movie is directed by Dan Bradley, stars Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and is scheduled to be release September 24, 2010.

Mary Jo has a few more photos from the film in her slideshow and you can see a few more from RIPizzo.

You can get all kinds of Red Dawn information from Beyond Hollywood including some YouTube videos from the filming (explosions!)

Speaking of explosions, here’s the trailer for the original Red Dawn.

Over on Absolute Michigan I noted that the 2000th photographer joined our Absolute Michigan pool on Flickr. It’s where almost all of the photos on Michigan in Pictures come from and really an amazing resource that we are so fortunate to have at our disposal.

Be sure to check this photo out bigger and in Sam’s Outside set (slideshow).

Today I’m at the Michigan Downtown Conference in Lansing. Assuming the wifi at the Lansing Center is up to the task, I’ll be posting over on updates from the conference on Absolute Michigan.

323 East that is … Joe took this promo photo for 323 East in downtown Royal Oak. 323 East is billed as a a mash-up of art, culture, lifestyle and fashion, and they’re certainly mashing it up in this photo!

Be sure and check it out bigger and in his Models & Promos set (slideshow).

Art & Apples … and a whole bunch of Michigan events

... one a day

… one a day, photo by suesue2.

Our Absolute Michigan calendar says there’s here’s a lot of cool events happening this weekend from long-standing events like the Celebration on the Grand in Grand Rapids, Wheatland Music Festival and Posen Potato Festival to newer events like the Ann Arbor HomeGrown Festival, UP Oktoberfest, Great Lakes Cider & Perry Festival and Michigan Schooner Festival.

I decided to go with what’s ripening up (and with my stomach) and highlight the Art & Apples Festival in Rochester. This annual event takes place September 11-13 and features over 250 fine art exhibitors, a variety of food, live entertainment, and free kids art activities.

See this photo bigger in Sue’s Blake’s slideshow and also check out the apples slideshow from the Absolute Michigan pool.

Oh Beans! (Michigan Green Beans that is)

Oh Beans!

Oh Beans!, photo by Larry the Biker.

Taste the Local Difference says that although a 1/2 cup of green beans packs only 22 calories, it’s a great source of fiber and Vitamins A,C, K, folate, and manganese. I’m guessing that there’s a few more than 22 calories here but think of the manganese!

Larry took this photo of the green bean harvest in Ray Township (in Macomb County). Be sure to check it out bigger … and also what the truck looks like en route!

The Morning After (summer)

Northern Michigan morning

Northern Michigan morning, photo by onewildwest.

As students all around the Michigan head back to school, I’d prefer to take a last look back at summertime (and to hope that we get a nice, long Indian summer this year).

Brent writes that this was taken on a perfect, peaceful morning on a gorgeous lake in the Pigeon River State Forest. Check it out bigger in his slideshow.
