View-Master Shiping 2006/06/28, photo by “CAVE CANEM”.

CAVE CANEM writes As a child, I was a big fan of those poorly lit, out of focus images in my Viewmaster toy. I used to just love my Boblo Island and 3d Casper Discs, I could stare at them for hours.

This is part of a great set of photos of people at Riverworks in Detroit and he notes that the photo is best viewed from childhood.

Comerica Park

Ryan says that this is a shot of Comerica Park from the top of the abandoned David Whitney Building in downtown Detroit. He desaturated the areas around the stadium to give the structure some pop.

Michigan’s Family Album

Photo from Michigan's Family Album

Michigan’s Family Album opens Aug. 5, 2006 and runs through Jan. 14, 2007 at the Michigan Historical Museum. The exhibit features more than 1,200 historical photographs from the collection of David Tinder that explore all aspects of Michigan life from the 1860s through the 1930s. Formats include daguerreotypes, tintypes, stereo views, cabinet cards, large-format photos (including panoramas) and a special display of postcards honoring every county in the state.

While most of the photographs in the collection were shot by professionals, the photo above was taken by an amateur, F. R. Oesterrich of Detroit. It shows a comfortably prosperous family (perhaps the photographer’s own) relaxing in the back yard, probably celebrating a child’s birthday. The ring toss game might be one of the gifts.

Learn more about Michigan’s Family Album from the Department of History, Arts & Libraries.

Like many of Darryl’s photos, this photo is geocoded and he has links that let you place it on all kinds of maps and even fly to the location of the photo in Google Earth. Check it out:

Map it: Google Earth | Street | Satellite | Hybrid | Nautical | Topo
Hmmm… apparently you have to go to these links from Flickr for them to work.

PS: Also like many of Darryl’s photos, this is a picture of a train and you can see a TON more in his Trains photo set.

Along the Dequindre Cut

Dequindre Cut; long view

Dequindre Cut; long view, photo by btezra.

btezra lives in Pittsburgh, and it’s always a treat when he brings his camera to Michigan. The above photo is one of many by a group of photographers who took photos…

Along the Dequindre Cut in Detroit, MI. Taken on a day when a group of us Flickr folk from East Lansing – Detroit – Pittsburgh – New York got together under the guise and direction of Bobby Alcott.

The skies made a huge difference this past Saturday, it’s hard to muck up an exposure when the sunshine is abundant and the skies are clear.

The Dequindre Cut is quite a sight to see in person, urban decay mixed in with the hope and promise of development and a place for the city to cherish and enjoy. Graffiti is everywhere; the vibrant colors enhance the experience while there. I hope to make it back sometime soon.

The Ol’ Ballpark

Tiger Stadium, Detroit Michigan

The Ol' Ballpark, photo by femaletrumpet02

This is part of a great set of photos by Lauren, who says:

Pictures of Old Tiger Stadium, which will be demolished to make way for a business district in Corktown. I attended my first Tigers game here in July of 1993 at the age of 9 with my dad. I remember that it was the Tigers vs. the Kansas City Royals. Dad and I had Grandstand seats, and I remember the electric atmosphere and the bleacher creatures doing their thing over in the bleacher.

Absolute Michigan has more about the future of Tiger Stadium (including a lot of history about this really cool ballpark).
