Mackinac Bridge Haze July 14 by Riviera Motel of Mackinac City
The Huron Daily Tribune shares that the National Weather Service & Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy issued an air quality alert for elevated levels of fine particulate over the weekend:
“Pollutants across the state are expected to reach the very unhealthy to unhealthy range in northern locations, with ranges of unhealthy to (unhealthy for sensitive groups) further south,” according to the service. Wildfire smoke from Canada is pushing into Michigan from till Monday. Increased fine particulate levels reached the western portion of the Upper Peninsula on Saturday afternoon.
You can read more in the Tribune & also check out an interactive map of Michigan air quality from the Manistee News.
This zoomed in view of the live Mackinac Bridge webcam at the Riviera Motel shows how much the smoke from wildfires is impacting the view of the Bridge this morning in Mackinac City.

Thanks for this. The map is especially helpful; I don’t want to stay inside, but I will. I don’t really understand why there are so many forest fires in Canada lately, but I sure wish they’d find a solution!

It’s climate change raising temps and changing rain patterns mostly. Also the forests that are burning are in many cases straight up wilderness where firefighting is challenging to impossible

It is terrible with all the wildfires. I saw a comment on a social media site yesterday that it was a controlled burn out of control … I don’t believe that though. Wasn’t one from a lightning strike? There are so many wildfires anymore, I lose track of the names of the areas, the reason for the fire. Look what is happening at the two national parks with the wildfires. So very sad.

A lot of the fires in Canada are in wilderness. As far as I’m concerned, we know the cause: out of control climate change that creates conditions for fires to thrive.

It’s going to get worse too – the butterflies and birds are not going to survive this air – humans are left gasping for breath if they exercise in it, even if it good health.

I did see the haze on Woodward on your Instagram earlier – amazing (not in a good way). Thanks for the info on the Concert of Colors too. BTW, the last crane was removed from the Gordie Howe Bridge on the American side today. Gettin’ there!
