The post about summer jobs available through the Michigan DNR was really popular so here’s a related opportunity via Leelanau.com

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is currently seeking summer interns interested in gaining hands-on experience in areas including wildlife and plant communities, history and cultural resources & outdoor recreation and stewardship while exploring one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Benefits include:

  • Cross-training opportunities in multiple fields
  • Contribute to meaningful projects that make a real impact
  • Opportunity to work alongside NPS professionals
  • Housing (in Empire) for some mainland staff

Head over to the Lakeshore’s website for available internship opportunities and all the details.

Lee took this while backpacking with his Boy Scout Troop on North Manitou Island way back in 2008. You can see more from the island & Leelanau County in his Manitou Island Backpacking gallery on Flickr.

The dream before AI

Island Dreams - North Manitou by Mary Westbrook

Island Dreams – North Manitou by Mary Westbrook

In her song “The Dream Before” of my favorite musicians, Laurie Anderson, observes that progress is a storm blowing us from Paradise into the future. While I am a big fan of lots of progress, I do not welcome the rise of Artificial Intelligence image generators that are positively overwhelming social media with idealized versions of real scenes. These false images are vexing, but they are only the tip of an iceberg that threatens to sink our ability to share information of any kind.

While many will probably say this picture is an AI creation due to the fancy clouds, Mary shared it four years ago on August 26, 2020. Head over to the Traverse City Camera Club group for more from Mary!

The Manitou Isle

Better Stay off the Lake

Better Stay of the Lake by Andrew McFarlane

Via Leelanau.com, here’s a photo of the Manitou Isle ferry that I took 20 years ago for . The boat was sold a year or so ago. According to the caption on the photo below that Manitou Island Transit recently shared, the beloved vessel is still sailing on the Great Lakes – off Michigan’s Thumb on Lake Huron! If anyone catches sight of it, be sure to let me know!

Manitou Transit service to North & South Manitou will begin on or before Memorial Day. More on their website.
