lake of the clouds, porcupine mountains

Sometimes I have to search and search and other times it’s just there. This photo is part of a set that wins “Best Title for October 2006” called If this isn’t “Deliverance,” then it must be Michigan UP. According to his bio, Mike is a brilliant yet reclusive volcanologist residing on my private game reserve on the Kamchatka Penninsula .. or something like that.

The DNR has information about hiking & camping in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (aka the Porkies). You can find more about the area at the Porcupine Mountains Ontonagon Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. In its Porcupine Mountains entry, Wikipedia says that they were named by the native Ojibwa people, supposedly because their silhouette had the shape of a porcupine and that “the most striking geological feature of the Porcupine Mountains is the long basalt and conglomerate escarpment parallel to the Lake Superior shore and overlooking Lake of the Clouds, a continuation of the same copper-bearing bedrock found farther northeast on the Keweenaw Peninsula.”

The park was formed in 1945 to protect the last large stand of old-growth forest remaining in Michigan. The park has an excellent network of backcountry trails for hiking, backpacking and cross-country skiing, rustic trailside cabins, campgrounds, swimming and boating areas. The North Country Trail runs through the park.

You have to be happy that this photo is part of the Michigan in Pictures Michigan Fall Wallpaper series!

Jagged end on Belle Isle

Is this photo of leaves like this photo of leaves? If it is, does that bother you?

This photo is from a new group on Flickr called Assignment: Detroit that assigns its members a location or theme to photograph and present their best pictures. The first assignment is Belle Isle. It sounds like a lot of fun and we’ll try and check back in at the end of the month!

Be sure and view this photo large because it’s amazing!

I assume that Tiki is UrbanTiki who, like many of us, is a huge Detroit Tigers fan.

Be sure to click the photo to see it large and appreciate the awesome shadows from Comerica Park on the walls of Ford Field. (also makes a GREAT background)
The Tigers continued their struggling last night. Get a whole bunch more Tigers v Yankees links, stories & photos at Absolute Michigan!

Kim took this photo on Friday in the Stonington area of Michigan’s Delta County (near Escanaba in the UP). Kim has taken a ton of great pictures of rural abandonment as well!

Red Skies over Muskegon

From the Small World Files: on Monday evening (at just about the time this picture was taken) my wife and I watched small tornados drop from the clouds over Lake Michigan (about 150 miles north of where this photo was taken).

Early Morning in Ludington

Early Morning in Ludington

The car ferry Badger (left) gets ready to make a trip across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin. The other ship is the Spartan. The 420′ Badger is the largest car ferry ever to sail Lake Michigan. When I was young, there were people who’d just ride back and forth and play cribbage. At today’s rates, I’m guessing the recreational rider may be a thing of the past.

Visit the website to learn more about the S.S. Badger car ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc. (including a cool tour of the ship)

rain off the hat (UM vs CMU college football game)

Boston Fan in Michigan says that you might have to see it large, but you can actually see raindrops spanging off the band hat here.

This photo is part of a set from Saturday’s UM v CMU game and on her excellent Blue Cats and Red Sox blog, Sam says that the band helped keep the fans at the Big House from mutinying during a 45 minute rain delay.

Note that she also talks about the Lions game so of course there is mild profanity.

Mission Point Lighthouse, Lake Michigan

Mission Point Lighthouse, Lake Michigan

Mission Point Lighthouse, Lake Michigan, photo by JSE_Imaging.

Speaking from experience, I have to say that the Old Mission light is one of the hardest to take a picture of. Probably all that fencing.

The lighthouse was established on March 3, 1859 and sits at the tip of Old Mission peninsula (the eastern peninsula that forms Grand Traverse Bay). Lighthouse guru Terry Pepper has a page on the Mission Point Lighthouse that includes an account of the taking of lands around the light from the Ottawa.

Wikipedia’s Mission Point Lighthouse entry is pretty limited, but it does have a link to an article that says the Old Mission light was a twin to the now destroyedMama Juda Lighthouse in the Detroit River (a/k/a Mamajuda).

South Manitou Island

When I logged on briefly last night to see what photos had been added during the day. Just about the first thing I saw was this amazing photo of South Manitou Island from the air. In addition to the freighter, the photo clearly shows the beautiful natural harbor that made South Manitou an early Great Lakes settlement and the North Manitou Shoal lighthouse (aka “the Crib”). As much as I love the maritime history of the Manitou Passage, the coolest thing for me is that I very clearly recall hearing the plane fly past just after 6 PM on Sunday evening.

The photo is part of Daytrip to Mackinac Island, a set of photos that also includes photos of the Island, Straits of Mackinac, the Mackinac Bridge and Sleeping Bear Dunes.
