It’s officially Fall. Deal with it.

Upper Bond Falls by Bill Hendricks

Upper Bond Falls by Bill Hendricks

The good people at Michigan Storm Chasers share that Monday, September 1st marks the beginning of meteorological fall which is distinct from astronomical fall which happens at the equinox on the 21st. They say it aligns better with our actual weather patterns and I (and the weather this year) agree with them. Storm Chasers are a great follow on Facebook or their website with an incredible network of weather resources including extensive live videos & webcams so give them a follow!

Bill took this at Bond Falls in the UP back in October of 2020. See his latest on Flickr!

PS: This is not “AI” – it’s a long exposure taken with a high quality camera & lens. Gear & skill unquestionably matter!

The Goldenrod Spider didn’t bite Frank Carter

Golden Rod Spider by Gowtham

Goldenrod Spider by Gowtham

Cathy Griffin of the Traverse Area Historical Society shared a little news from 120 years ago in 1905:

FRANK CARTER, local resident who had been in Chicago and Grand Rapids during the summer, returned Monday night being ill from the poisonous effects of a spider which walked over his arm, leaving a poisonous track at every step. Last week, while lying on the ground at Grand Rapids, an immense yellow spider jumped on his arm near his elbow and ran down to his wrist. Mr. Carter smashed his poisonous body on his arm and it immediately began to swell from the poison. The arm was inflamed and swollen with white spots. Under the advice of a physician, Mr. Carter went home to care for his arm.

It’s been a minute since I’ve featured a photo from Gowtham. He shares that while driving through the back roads of Huron Mountains from Houghton to Marquette, “I took a few wrong forks in succession and one of those forks had a plethora of Blue Vervains (the flower in the picture). Taking one wrong fork after another, driving slow and paying attention paid off – as one of those blue vervains had an uncommon yellow tinge. I stopped to look carefully and much to my surprise was this tiny little Golden Rod Spider.”

…These spiders may be yellow or white, depending on the flower in which they are hunting. Especially younger females, which may hunt on a variety of flowers such as daisies and sunflowers, may change color “at will”. Older females require large amounts of relatively large prey to produce the best possible clutch of eggs. They are therefore, in North America, most commonly found in goldenrod (Solidago sp.), a bright yellow flower which attracts large numbers of insects, especially in autumn. It is often very hard even for a searching human to recognize one of these spiders on a yellow flower.”

See more in his Michigan Wild Flowers gallery on Flickr & be sure to keep an eye out for the little things!

I want to be very clear that this spider is not venomous (and no spider has “venomous tracks”). Only the Northern Black Widow and the Brown Recluse have bites that endanger humans. The rest are out there happily dispatching harmful pests. My guess is that it was a Brown Recluse as their bites have sort of a bullseye pattern with a white center.

Michigan’s smoky summer is not in your imagination

Lakeside by Mark Ellefson

Lakeside by Mark Ellefson

If you’ve been thinking that this summer is smokier than most, you are not wrong according to WKAR Public Media and Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism:

So far, smoke-induced air quality advisories have been issued for more than 20 days. Last year, there were none due to wildfires.

Atmospheric conditions and wind direction bring smoke from Canada into Michigan. High-and low-pressure systems are common ways smoke is transported, said Rebecca Hansen, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Grand Rapids office. Most recently, all those cloudless skies—due to a high-pressure system—helped blow the smoke right into the state, she said. ‘”Due to the light winds moving around, that’s helping the smoke stay over the area too … Canada has been experiencing warmer and drier conditions, and that definitely increases the wildfire risk,” Hansen said.

Mark took this in the UP a few days ago. See more on his Flickr.

Michigan will emerge from an absolutely BRUTAL heat dome later today, but until them I hope you can find a large amount of cool water to hide in!

Craig took this photo a few years ago on Lake Superior, I think at Presque Isle Park where the water temp is currently 48.2 degrees! Here’s a couple recent pics from Pictured Rocks that he shared on Facebook. See more there and for sure view & purchase his work on his website!

Winter in the shade, winter in da Yoop!

winter, upper tahquamenon falls, michigan by twurdemann

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

-Charles Dickens

…and it is also winter in the UP! While rains are expected to wash much of the snow from Michigan today, mLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa shares that the National Weather Service is predicting 10-15″ of snow for areas of the Upper Peninsula including as much as TWO FEET of snow for the western UP!

twurdemann shares that this incredible winter wonderland is created by freezing spray/mist from the waterfall at Michigan’s Tahquamenon Falls State Park & the brown tannins in the water. Check out more in their Winter gallery on Flickr that includes some KNOCKOUT ice cave photos from the Canadian shore of Lake Superior!

W-w-w-whiteout on US-2!

Whiteout on US-2 by Gustafsons Smoked Fish

Gustafson’s Smoked Fish shared this photo yesterday from their Facebook as they closed due to generally horrible conditions. They are open again today & located about a half hour west of the Mackinac Bridge on US-2 along the northern shore of Lake Michigan. The family has been making and selling smoked fish, jerky & cheese curds for nearly 50 years, and they have always been one of my favorite post-Bridge stops!

Now here’s a shot of their delicious salmon. If anyone is driving past do you mind picking up a couple pounds for me?

Waterfall Wednesday: Winter Wonderland at Bond Falls

Winter Wonderland at Bond Falls by Michigan Nut Photography

Winter Wonderland at Bond Falls by Michigan Nut Photography

Pure Michigan shares that lower Bond Falls is a scenic and popular waterfall in the Upper Peninsula’s Ontonagon County that is created by the middle branch of the Ontonagon River tumbling over a thick belt of fractured rock that divides it into numerous small cascades. Total drop of the falls is approximately 50 feet & you can get directions & more from the DNR page for Bond Falls Scenic Site.

I originally saw this photo posted by a Facebook page not affiliated with the photographer, something that has become increasingly common. I really hope we can all endeavor to share info & links for the photos we share and to block & report pages that steal photos from actual photographers!

You can view & purchase more Michigan waterfall pictures including these on John’s website, and also get prints, canvas, puzzles, photo coasters, note cards, and Michigan calendars at michigannutphotography.com so what are you waiting for?
