Ask “The Brain ” – Marvin’s Mechanical Museum, photo by DetroitDerek.

Derek writes:

“The Brain” is one of the animated mechanical fortune tellers at Marvin’s Mechanical Museum. Marvin has been collecting video games, games of skill, and items such as these ( some date back to 1900, and others were custom built specifically for Marvin) since 1960. Marvin’s opened in 1990, and is listed as one of the 100 most unique museums in the world. Admission is free.

Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum is located in Farmington Hills and it operated by Marvin Yagoda. It’s designed to be fun for the entire family and the web site is a treat!

Speaking of the weird and wacky, when we don’t forget, the last Wednesday of every month is a “Weird Wednesday” on Absolute Michigan with help from Weird Michigan. We didn’t forget today, and there’s some great stuff on Michigan UFO Sightings today!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Michigan

As a Scotsman, my understanding of today is that St. Patrick drove the snakes our of Ireland to make it safe for Guinness. Today it’s a day where the young, young at heart and leprechauns can join together in the celebration of Irish heritage and perhaps tip a pint or two at their local Irish pub. Dogs and even horses aren’t left out of the wearin’ o’ the green. It’s an especially big deal in Detroit, home to a big St. Paddy’s Day Parade and the dapperest Irish web site in Michigan. Of course Detroit doesn’t take it to the extreme levels that our Windy City neighbors do.

Somebody told me that I might have a wee drop of Irish blood, though probably not as much as the descendants of the kids in this photo or true Michigan Hibernians.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Michigan!

I suspect that it doesn’t matter as much what we celebrate as how.

May your time be spent with those you love in happiness, health and bounty.

If you’re looking to capture a little of the magic and fun of being young and outside in Michigan, I can’t think of a better place to start than with Jessie’s photos of snow (slideshow).

Here’s hoping you get to spend a little quality time this week with the ones you love and several billion snowflakes.

Jonathan writes that the title of this photo is better understood if you know that Paul is also known as Ski. It was taken at the Sleeping Bear Dunes and yes, it makes awesome wallpaper!

I will add that this post is better understood if you understand that I spent an hour working on a post about skiing that’s gonna take two hours – happy weekend everyone!

Raking Shadows on Halloween

Probably the coolest Halloween photo I’ve ever seen. I would totally go to a movie with this on the poster. Richard says this is Sunset over farmlands in Dundee, Michigan. He has another in the same vein titled Darkness Looms.

Happy Halloween, Michigan … hope the treats far outnumber the tricks!

If this isn’t Michigan, then I don’t know what is.

(from the Frankenmuth Summer Music Festival, held mid-August every year and featuring that heavy Barvarian sound)

Mike has a site for his photography/new media work called monitor pop! that I think you might enjoy.

cornhole sunset

Winner of this month’s most interesting title…

The Cornhole Game Association says:

There are many people who have varying views of how to play cornhole or what the actual name is, cornhole, bean bag game, softshoes, etc. We have discovered the most popular way to play and have standardized the rules and dimensions so people from all over the country can play the same way.

Their forum looks at the conflicting accounts of the origins and evolution of the game. A Cincinnati native who recently moved to michigan noted …the trend is getting hot up here. They are all calling it ” Polish Horseshoes”. I just laugh and tell them that we call it Cornhole. Oh well they will get it soon enough.

The Cincinatti Enquirer says that Cincinnatian Ryan Whetstone started the Cornhole Game Association, so you Polish horseshoers may be in the wrong.
