Through the viewfinder: Detroit at night

Detroit at night, photo by caterpillars

I was linking to “TTV” photos on Michigan in Pictures and noticed that the photo that had been here was lost in the mists of the internets. Fortunately, that lets me feature one of my all time favorite (if fake) TTV shots. You can (and should) check out Laura’s fake TTV slideshow.

Here’s a photo of Comerica Park as seen from the top of the Mezzanine, one of many great photos in the Detroit Tigers pool on Flickr.

Paul Hitz started the pool just a few weeks ago and there’s already almost 300 photos over everything from opening day to back in the day to the glory days.

rain off the hat (UM vs CMU college football game)

Boston Fan in Michigan says that you might have to see it large, but you can actually see raindrops spanging off the band hat here.

This photo is part of a set from Saturday’s UM v CMU game and on her excellent Blue Cats and Red Sox blog, Sam says that the band helped keep the fans at the Big House from mutinying during a 45 minute rain delay.

Note that she also talks about the Lions game so of course there is mild profanity.

The Motor City, it all of its modern glory, shines bright against a surreal sky. Check out this detailed Wikipedia entry on the History of Detroit and discover how the city has become the place it is today.

Mission Point Lighthouse, Lake Michigan

Speaking from experience, I have to say that the Old Mission light is one of the hardest to take a picture of. Probably all that fencing.

The lighthouse was established on March 3, 1859 and sits at the tip of Old Mission peninsula (the eastern peninsula that forms Grand Traverse Bay). Lighthouse guru Terry Pepper has a page on the Mission Point Lighthouse that includes an account of the taking of lands around the light from the Ottawa.

Wikipedia’s Mission Point Lighthouse entry is pretty limited, but it does have a link to an article that says the Old Mission light was a twin to the now destroyedMama Juda Lighthouse in the Detroit River (a/k/a Mamajuda).

2006 Michigan State Fair

The annual Michigan State Fair continues through September 4. The state fairgrounds are located in southeast Michigan at the corner of Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Detroit – two miles from I-75, three miles from I-696, and eight miles from I-94.

The motion and color in the photo above is incredible but this one really captures the overall vibe of the Fair.

This photo of the Hotel Eddystone serves as the poster for Bobby Alcott’s show tomorrow night (Friday, Aug 18) at Karras Bros. Tavern in Detroit. The show is presented by Exposure.Detroit, a Motor City based photographer’s group that is part of the larger Exposure.Network.

You can get all the show details by clicking the poster below and I also encourage you to check out this interview with Bobby and this set of photos of the Hotel Eddystone. As a note to people who are sad that such a glorious building has fallen into such a state, the hotel is currently being renovated.
