The Colors of Fall

As I took a little drive yesterday in Leelanau & Benzie counties in Northern Michigan I realized that almost overnight, Autumn and fall color had arrived.

A good place to start your fall color touring is with the Fall Color section at puremichigan.org. In addition to color updates, you can get some really nice ideas for Fall Color tours all across the state along with an idea of when color is at its best in each location.

A few more good sites for fall color are the All Things Autumn for West Michigan, the M-22 Color Tour, Exploring the North UP Fall Color and Up North Color Tours for northern Lower Michigan and the UP.

A great place to go for pics of current fall color is the Absolute Michigan pool on Flickr. Just dive right in, click for the latest fall color shots or check out the all-time most popular fall color shots.

You also don’t want to miss fall from Michigan in Pictures, which includes our popular Michigan fall wallpaper series!

Full Color in the Keweenaw and at Haven Falls

Haven Falls

Haven Falls, photo by dcclark.

This morning the folks at Pasty.com emailed me to say that the Keweenaw doesn’t get much more colorful than this and that they’re:

…hearing that it’s peak or just past-peak with the changing leaves UP North here, but whatever you call it, our surroundings look like someone took out a paintbrush and went to work coloring the Copper Country. If you haven’t already had a chance to go for a color tour, you’d better hurry, because the show won’t last forever.

Click over to Pasty.com to see some photos from Joe Kirkish and check it out every day for great shots from the Pasty Cam!

GoWaterfalling.com says that Haven Falls is

…a very scenic falls located in a small county park near the shores of Lac La Belle. This waterfall is very symetrical. Haven Falls is very similar looking to Jacob’s Falls, but Haven Falls is considerably steeper. It is possible that there are more drops above Haven Falls just as the are additional drops above Jacob’s Falls, but I did not explore.

Visiting this waterfall is very easy. It is visible from the road and the falls is only a few hundred feet from the parking area…

Haven Falls is a bit out of the way. But then again, the entire Keewenaw peninsula is a bit out of the way. The park is on the north side of Lac la Belle Road on the north west shore of Lac la Belle.

David has thoughtfully posted this photo background boomtacular. Check out more photos from David in his Fall slideshow and on his photo-a-day blog, Cliffs and Ruins.

Michigan in Pictures has lots more Fall wallpaper and a sweet fall color tour of the The Keweenaw Peninsula (Houghton, Eagle River, Copper Harbor).

Tenille writes that she took this:

Standing on the railing at the 250′ bluff overlooking the manistee river valley. Locals know the area by the name “high rollaways,” a term born during the lumber boom around the turn of the last century. Lumberjacks used to roll logs, destined for mills in Manistee, down the hills into the river.

You can read and account of a winter hike at the Rollaways and view a map of the High Rollaways.

Fall Colors on Winona Lake in Houghton County

Winona Lake

Just about a month ago I used Marty’s photo of Camp 5 Lake to say that fall color was on the way. As his photo from a visit last week to the Copper Country shows, it has most splendidly arrived.

If you are interested in taking your own fall color tour of the Keweenaw Peninsula, click that link. For more about the Keweenaw, click this one!

Michigan fall … and the Michigan Fall Wallpaper Series

Michigan fall.

Michigan fall., photo by upthedubs1.

The latest in our Michigan Fall Wallpaper series* is part of Patrick McGowan’s Michigan Autumn set (slideshow)

This is the part where I think of something to add to the photo, but all I can come up with is “This is from October 30, 2005, so don’t despair – there’s still time to enjoy that fall color!”

*I’m sure a lot of you didn’t even know Michigan in Pictures had a “Michigan Fall Wallpaper series“. It’s actually a relatively new thing and by “relatively new” I mean “I thought it up this morning”. I’ll add photos to the series that are available in the bigger sizes to grace your computer’s desktop. Most of the pictures are on Flickr and you may have to join Flickr and/or become a contact of the photographer to be able to view that size.

Fall Wallpaper: Up North, 1975

Up North

A ton of the visits to Michigan in Pictures come (unsurprisingly) from people searching for all kinds of things. Some from the last 2 days include the specific (Hessel boat show, Henderson Castle, Hartwick Pines – must be “H” week) and the general (surfing michigan, pics of detroit, nature photos). One thing remains constant: people are always looking for something nice to adorn their desktop. I’ve noticed a spike in people searching for “fall backgrounds” and “fall wallpaper” over the last few days that mirrors the changing of the trees, so it must be time to start rolling out some of the fall color photos I’ve found.

If you’re looking for fall color photos, try the fall tag. I tag any photo that’s large enough to make a nice background with the “wallpaper” tag – just look at the bottom right of the post to see that!

About this photo, PaleBlueEyes writes:

So, my grandpa has a ton of old slideshow photos that I’m helping him convert to digital pictures, then make into slideshow DVD’s. The pictures are mostly of the family and various vacations in Europe, India, and around the US. This picture happened to be one of my favorites. It was taken on my grandparent’s property in the UP in the fall of 1975…I think even with all the technology on cameras today, I’ll never be able to take this beautiful of a picture.
