I started Michigan in Pictures way back on December 30, 2025. In the 19 years since, I’ve shared 2840 posts – well, 2841 now – to 1.6 million people! Thank you all for being a part of it!!

The most popular post ever remains Know Your Michigan Turtles, but every year Underwater Stonehenge in Lake Michigan gains a little ground. The top five rounds out with Fist of a Champion: Detroit’s Monument to Joe Louis, Northern Lights Forecast: Predicting the Aurora Borealis in Michigan & Detroit’s Michigan Central Station. To make the boxes below line up nicely, I’ve added #6 which is a personal favorite: Slumpy: the William Livingstone Mansion in Brush Park.

In 2025, I am going to celebrate the 20th year by revisiting some of the amazing photographers & photographic subjects to see where they are now!

I took this photo & the one below at the Manitou Music Festival at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore way back in 2005! You can see a lot more in my Music Makes Me Smile gallery on Flickr, and the dancing fellow in the bottom picture is Jacob Wheeler, editor & publisher of the fantastic Glen Arbor Sun!

Stevie Wonder coming to Detroit & Grand Rapids

Stevie Wonder Mural Detroit by Andrew McFarlane

mLive shares that Motown great and 25-time Grammy winner Stevie Wonder will be doing a pair of October concerts in Grand Rapids and Detroit, one at Little Caesars Arena in the Motor City on Tuesday, October 22, and the other at Van Andel Arena in GR on Wednesday, October 30. Tickets went on sale Friday – click those links before they’re gone!

The Detroit Free Press shares that the Stevie Wonder mural in downtown Detroit was finished in 2019 by London-based artist Richard Wilson who paid for the mural out of his own pocket!

Visible from Brush Street on the south-facing wall of the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Wilson’s portrait spans roughly 8,000 square feet and is large enough to be seen by an airplane passing overhead. “For me, he’s the greatest living singer, songwriter and musician,” said the 45-year-old Wilson. “In 300 years, I’m sure he’ll be looked (at) as a Beethoven, Mozart, Bach — that kind of epic influence on humanity.

This is another one of my pics. A couple ways you can support me are to subscribe to the Michigan in Pictures Facebook (and join the group) and for sure to toss me a couple bucks on Patreon!

Sleeping Bear Dunes Concert

Dune Shift

Dune Shift, photo by farlane

Today on Leelanau.com I posted about one of my favorite Michigan musical events – the Glen Arbor Art Association’s 15th annual Dune Climb concert. The FREE concert takes place this Sunday, July 14 at 7:00 pm.

The setting is the incomparable natural amphitheater of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and I heartily encourage you to join thousands of others at this free concert that has become a summer tradition in Leelanau.

This year one of Michigan’s premier jazz ensembles, the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, will present big band and original compositions. Some of the area’s finest musicians will be performing, including vocalist Edye Evans-Hyde. There is no charge for the concert, but a National Park pass is required for parking. Free shuttle buses will provide transportation to overflow parking lots. Bring chairs or (better) blankets to sit on. Some folding chairs are also provided in front of the stage. In the event of rain, the show will go on at the Glen Arbor Town Hall.

The Dune Climb concert is an amazing experience for folks young and old (sand dune = good fun for energetic kids) and is part of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival.

If you regularly follow Michigan in Pictures, you know that I don’t often feature my own photos but this one really captures the amazingness of the dune concert! The ladies at the top are actually hundreds of feet up the dune yet still getting amazing sound flowing up to them. Check it out background big and see more from the show including the unmodified version of this photo in my Music Makes Me Smile slideshow. The photo uses a technique called “tilt-shift” created using a simple photoshop technique.

More dunes on Michigan in Pictures!
