In nearly 30 years of doing Michigan in Pictures, I’ve had a lot of firsts, but this is the first time I’ve shared a photo from the VP of Travel Michigan aka Pure Michigan! Dave has been an absolute champion for Michigan over the years. He was at the Detroit Tigers home opener that they won 5-4 and writes:

It was sunny.
It was cloudy.
It was windy.
It was cold.
It actually…snowed.
The Tiger’s won their ’24 opening home game.
A perfect day.

Opening Day 2021!

The Detroit Tigers open the 2021 season at Comerica Park today at 1:10 PM. MLB shares:

Cleveland heads into the season looking to lean on its stars to keep its window of contention open for another run at the postseason. The Tigers return to Motown with a new manager looking for a fresh start and an influx of young talent looking to turn the corner on their rebuild and begin the climb back toward contention.

…It’ll be a different-looking opener due to the pandemic, but the 20 percent capacity allowed marks the first game with fans at Comerica Park since Sept. 26, 2019. Fans will be greeted with a familiar division rivalry that Cleveland has owned in recent years, including 18 wins in 19 meetings in ’19, and seven of 10 games last season.

…manager A.J. Hinch will make his first appearance in a Tigers uniform since he was Detroit’s backup catcher on the 2003 team. He’ll also manage his first Major League game since he led the Astros in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. Hinch sat out last year under suspension from Major League Baseball stemming from the Astros’ sign-stealing investigation, a controversy that led to his dismissal as manager in Houston.

Today was supposed to be the home opener of the Detroit Tigers but of course that’s not happening. I’ve been living just a few blocks away, and I can’t begin to describe the impact of having every one of the cities amazing venues either empty or being repurposed as emergency healthcare & food delivery locations.

The economic impact to those who work there or rely on crowds of fans of sports & music to survive is frightening, and the loss of one of the beating hearts of a city that still shows up every day, even when our teams aren’t at their best is really putting a hole in my heart this morning. Stay strong everyone.

Detroit Tigers Opening Day, 2015 edition

At 1:08 PM today the Detroit Tigers face the Minnesota Twins in their 2015 home opener at Comerica Park. The Tigers’ timeline page begins:

On April 24, 1901, the Tigers prepared to take to the field for their first official American League game. A standing room only crowd was anticipated at Bennett Park, but unpredictable weather postponed the opening by a day.

On that historic afternoon, April 25, 1901, in front of 10,000 fans, the Tigers entered the ninth inning trailing Milwaukee, 13-4. A series of hits and miscues followed, moving the score to 13-12 with two runners on. With two out, Tiger Frank “Pop” Dillon faced reliever Bert Husting, and the lefthanded hitter rapped a two-run double to complete a 14-13 comeback win.

Playoff Time, 2014

The Detroit Tigers kick off their fourth straight postseason appearance today vs the Baltimore Orioles at 5:30 PM at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. While the Tigers were almost everyone’s pick for the playoffs in 2014, the Orioles were definitely not. View the series preview right here.

Here’s some interesting post-season storylines that may be of interest to only me!

Tigers’ superstar Miguel Cabrera declined his post-season bonus saying “I just want the ring.” While he has a massive contract, I think that the focus he displays is a good sign! Another great sign for Miggy is being named the American League Player of the Month for September. It’s the 4th time he’s received this honor and it’s great to have him hot as we head into October.
Speaking of hot, the man who bats behind Cabrera has had a wonderful year at the plate, finishing second in the AL Batting Title with a .335 batting average!
From the same mLive article, David Price finished 1st in the AL in strikeouts with 271 and tonight’s starter Max Scherzer finished third with 252. Max was also tied for the AL lead in victories with 18 and 9th in ERA at 3.15, and Tiger closer Joe Nathan finished 5th in saves.
Is it all about the pitching? In Scherzer, Justin Verlander and David Price, the Tigers have the last three AL Cy Young winners. Will that experience and talent be reflected in their performances?
Max to the max? There’s no question that with his second straight postseason game 1 start, Scherzer is the Tigers top ace. Mitch Albom has a nice column exploring Scherzer’s shot at crafting a legacy and what might happen in free agency.
Whether or not Rajai Davis will be on the roster for the Orioles series. Davis was added in the offseason in art for speed, and he led the Tigers in stolen bases and helped to triple their stolen base count from 2013.
At 6-1, the Tigers are among the favorites to win the World Series in one of the most balanced fields in recent memory. Here’s hoping they can keep their focus in 2014 and bring the ring!

Happy 113th Opening Day, Tiger Fans!

The Detroit Tigers open the 2014 season today at 1:08 PM at Comerica Park vs the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers got their start as a charter member of the Western League in 1894 and played their first American League game in 1900 when the Western League changed its name. It wasn’t until 1901, however, that the American League decided not to renew the original National Agreement, declare itself a second major league and compete with the National League for players. The Detroit Tiger timeline says:
