rain off the hat (UM vs CMU college football game)

Boston Fan in Michigan says that you might have to see it large, but you can actually see raindrops spanging off the band hat here.

This photo is part of a set from Saturday’s UM v CMU game and on her excellent Blue Cats and Red Sox blog, Sam says that the band helped keep the fans at the Big House from mutinying during a 45 minute rain delay.

Note that she also talks about the Lions game so of course there is mild profanity.

Ryan says that this is a shot of Comerica Park from the top of the abandoned David Whitney Building in downtown Detroit. He desaturated the areas around the stadium to give the structure some pop.

The Ol’ Ballpark

Tiger Stadium, Detroit Michigan

This is part of a great set of photos by Lauren, who says:

Pictures of Old Tiger Stadium, which will be demolished to make way for a business district in Corktown. I attended my first Tigers game here in July of 1993 at the age of 9 with my dad. I remember that it was the Tigers vs. the Kansas City Royals. Dad and I had Grandstand seats, and I remember the electric atmosphere and the bleacher creatures doing their thing over in the bleacher.

Absolute Michigan has more about the future of Tiger Stadium (including a lot of history about this really cool ballpark).

This photo is part of a great set of photos that you will probably want to view as a slideshow.

Michigan Golf Magazine says that Arcadia Bluffs offers one the most dazzling collection of golf holes in the United States. Visit the web site for Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course (located about 20 minutes north of Manistee on M-22).

Says about all you need to say about Opening Day.

Well, I guess we could also say "Check out this set of photos from the Detroit Tigers Opening Day 2005 by UrbanTiki".

And we could add a pointer to Ryan Southen's new online store "urbanexchange" at Cafe Press (from which he hopes to make money to purchase better camera equipment and such).

It probably wouldn't hurt to stand up and shout "Play Ball!" either.

Spring Training, Let’s Talk Tiger Baseball!

UPDATE – NOVEMBER 20, 2015 – The Detroit Tigers have acquired (or re-acquired) outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Atlanta Braves. Also, of interest only to me, this was the 100th post on Michigan in Pictures from March of 2016!

Cameron Maybin Detroit Tigers

It’s a sunny morning in March in Michigan – a perfect time to head to Florida for a little dose of Spring Training!

Peggy offers some great shots including this one of Cameron Maybin and another of new Tiger skipper Jim Leyland & Andy Van Slyke. She reports that it was a great day for a game, and the Tigers (split squad) beat the Toronto Blue Jays!

On the ever-growing photo bonanza that is Flickr you will find many other Tiger pics including this great shot of Tiger hurler Eric Eckenstahler at Lakeland.

The Detroit Tigers web site reports that 10 Tigers are playing in the World Baseball Classic and also that over 500 pieces from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., will be on display at the Henry Ford Museum from TODAY (March 11) through September 5, 2006 as part of the Baseball as America exhibit.

Photos from Super Bowl XL in Detroit

Ford Field by Ian Freimuth

This dynamic photo from Ian Freimuth is one of a number of photos of Super Bowl XL shared in the Absolute Michigan group and in the Super Bowl XL photo group. He’s also got a great up close shot of Ford Field.

One highlight more Michiganders of the Super Bowl was that it was Detroit native and Pittsburgh Steeler great Jerome Bettis’s final game. Here’s a short video from the NFL that begins with one of the coolest tributes I’ve ever seen.

Celebration!

Be sure to check out these other shots from Dave Durbin (he also has about 180 more of Super Bowl weekend in the Motor City):

Race Bannon writes: I could have reached out and touched him.. He was one of the folks who got free admission to the Super Bowl … though only for halftime.

Be sure to check out Bobby Alcott’s gallery from Super Bowl XL as well.

Ford Field, Home of Super Bowl XL, Right there in Detroit, Michigan, a Beautiful city that could use a boost!

Ford Field

I looked and looked for a picture that could summarize the day of Super Bowl XL. I found this picture of greektown that I liked quite a lot, another of a happy Steeler fan that’s not from Michigan but is really great, and another of an aerial view of Ford Field at kickoff (the players look a lot different from this angle). I even thought about a shot of the really neat interior of Ford Field I had taken but discarded it as “too vain”.
I decided in the end to go with this great shot of Ford Field from Thanksgiving Day 2005 and my prediction: Seahawks 23 – Steelers 21

The Big Football, The Bigger Vehicle

The colors made me think it was a Steelers football, but it turns out it’s promoting the official vehicle of Super Bowl XL (click for photos of the nifty banner Cadillac has).

The photographer, Ray Wert, is better known as the blogger DetroitWonk. On his site, he has great stuff about Detroit every day including highlights of discussion elsewhere in the Motown Blogverse.

He also tipped us of to the very cool webcam for Campus Martius Park (site of the Motown Winter Blast).

Looking Towards Ford Field

Nice shot of how Ford Field sits amidst the city. It’s not an “out in the boonies” field like the Silverdome was but right in the heart of Detroit.

The photographer also has a great shot of Woodward Avenue that shouldn’t be missed.

Here’s another view of Ford Field that lets you zoom waaaay in.
