Big Penny celebrates munching her 100th truck!

Number 98 by STUPID - Lansing

Number 98 by STUPID – Lansing

Back in May, we introduced you to Big Penny, Lansing’s Truck Munching Bridge & now she’s back to show the Mighty Mac it’s not the only bridge making news. This diminutive 12-foot tall bridge has taken some big bites over the years – so many that as of May 1, 2025 she had snacked on 87 semis since counting began in 2004. Despite the added exposure Penny has been on an absolute tear in 2025, and yesterday our friends at STUPID Lansing threw a party celebrating the 100th truck munched! WLNS Lansing was there to document this historic occasion, and you can head over to STUPID – Lansing for more on this important story & some great Big Penny merch!

Big Penny Scoreboard by Stupid Lansing

Big Penny Scoreboard by Stupid Lansing

The other day, the hardworking team at Stupid Lansing alerted me to the existence of Big Penny, Lansing’s Truck-munching bridge! mLive shares that the bridge was completed in the summer of 1928 by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, spanning Pennsylvania Avenue (thus the name Big Penny) near the Potter Park Zoo. Read on for more about the bridge & to learn about how the Stupid Lansing team gave Big Penny its new fangs & eyes!

The 12′ 0″ bridge has now snacked upon 87 semis since counting began in 2004, and 8 so far this year! Will it surpass the 29 trucks munched of 2024? Stay tuned to Stupid Lansing for updates!!

Lighting the way to better driving

Pothole Lighthouse by Tim Webb

Pothole Lighthouse by Tim Webb

Our friends at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association share: And now for something completely different: A new initiative to highlight the problem of potholes. Lighthouses are being trialled at night to warn unsuspecting motorists.

😆 No lies detected! See more of the great pics they share in our Michigan in Picture group on Facebook & for sure visit their website to learn more about this champion for Great Lakes heritage!

I don’t think the lighthouse above is based on a Michigan one, so here’s a shot of Point Betsie on Lake Michigan GLLKA shared recently by Ross Ellet! More funny business on Michigan in Pictures.

2024 Michigan Whale Migration underway!

Mackinac Bridge Whalewatching Station September 18, 2024

Researchers at the Mackinac Bridge Whalewatching Station (MBWS) have announced that the 2024 Great Lakes Whale Migration is officially underway!

“Warmer temperatures have once again pushed the migration several weeks earlier, but we are seeing great numbers from all species except of course Orcas who just don’t seem to be that into the Great Lakes,” explained MBWS Chief Cetologist Bonnie Beluga. Lots more on the Lake Michigan Whale Migration Station website.

The Great Flip Flop Caper of 2024

Recovered Flip Flops by Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Recovered Flip Flops by Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Tahquamenon Falls State Park shared yesterday that there has been a thief taking flip flops and crocs from campers at their Rivermouth Campground:

It was discovered today that there are multiple thieves, and they have four legs and are adorable. All of the shoes shown were found outside a fox den. If you look closely, you can see teeth marks in the flip flops and straps have been chewed off the light pink crocs. Heads up if you are camping this summer at the Rivermouth, you’ll want to keep your shoes inside your camper 🦊

So if you do camp at Tahquamenon Falls State Park (and you very much should) keep an eye out for the Flip Fox Gang! Much more Tahquamenon Falls & more Michigan foxes on Michigan in Pictures.

Here’s an awesome shot I’ve shared before, but it’s always good to have a little Wednesday weirdness. Blondieyooper explained “These cute little ones were fun to find. The blueberries were big compared to the mushrooms. :) I’m easily amused!”

Me too! See more in her Dr Seussish File gallery on Flickr.
