Arbor Day, Michigan and Exposure.Detroit!

visually grounded

Untitled, photo by caterpillars and visually grounded photo by mlephotos

Today (April 29) is Arbor Day, a nationwide celebration that encourages people to take the simple action of planting trees. According to the Arbor Day history page, Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by Julius Sterling Morton. Morton grew up in Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan. He actually grew up in Monroe, and you can read his story from Hometown History Tours (a very cool site btw!).

look who's showing at the woodbridge!!

A whole ton of Arbor Day can be found at the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance (Facebook).

I was faced with a bind this morning when I became aware of the fact that two of my favorite photographers, Laura Dyszynski aka caterpillars and Meghan East (mlephotos), were the subject of the latest Exposure.Detroit opening tomorrow night (April 30) from 7-10 PM at the Woodbridge Pub in Detroit! Click for all the details!

Thankfully, both women had photos of trees to choose from!

Check Laura’s out bigger and in her slideshow.

You can see Meghan’s photo on black and in her you like {top 30 favorites} slideshow, but the best way to see both of their work is to go to their show!

Rodin’s Thinker, Detroit Institute of Art

The Detroit Institute of Arts has a collection of over 60,000 works of art across a wide range of media. One of the most visible is their cast of sculptor August Rodin’s iconic sculpture, The Thinker. More than twenty monumental size bronze casts of the sculpture are in museums around the world. Rodin made the first small plaster version around 1880, but the first large-scale bronze cast was not completed until 1902.

The DIA’s version sits outside the museum’s main entrance. It was cast in 1904 and donated to the museum by Horace H. Rackham in 1922. The bronze sculpture weighs about 2000 pounds and sits on a 12,000 pound granite base. You can see more views of The Thinker at the DIA.

Tiger Manager Jim Leyland joins 1500 win club!

Strategizing

This morning’s Roar of the Tigers provides a humorous but insightful look at Detroit Tiger Manager Jim Leyland’s 1500th win. This is a huge milestone for a manager, something that only 18 other coaches in Major League history have done The Detroit News reports that Leyland is:

…only the second active one to reach that level, his good friend Tony LaRussa being the other.

Leyland eyes glistened too much and too often not to be able to tell. After quite a game for the Tigers, it was quite a moment. “It just means we’re old,” Leyland said. “But we’re not going to talk about that. Good win, that’s what you have to do — win tough games on the road.”

Age aside, a tremendous accomplishment for Leyland. For more on his career, check out his page from the Detroit Tigers and the Jim Leyland entry on Wikipedia where we learn:

James Richard “Jim” Leyland (born December 15, 1944) is a Major League Baseball manager for the Detroit Tigers. He led the Florida Marlins to a World Series championship in 1997. With the Tigers victory in the 2006 American League Championship Series, Leyland has become the seventh manager in history to win pennants in both the National and American Leagues. He is a three-time Manager of the Year Award winner, twice in the National League (1990 and 1992), and once in the American League in 2006.

Bullets & Torpedos, Seger & Sheen

Michigan had two superstar performances on Saturday.

By all accounts Bob Seger’s show in Grand Rapids was by far the more successful. You can click over to mLive for a review of show and highlights of Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band rocking Van Andel Arena that included a special guest performance by Kid Rock. Michigan-born Seger is on a nationwide tour that will come back home to finish May 17-21 with 3 shows at the Palace of Auburn Hills – details on his web site.

The second was Charlie Sheen’s My Violent Torpedo of Truth, which was violently panned by reviewers and the audience. Wade writes:

The show’s failure has been overblown by a lot of people and the media. My wife and I went out of curiosity. The tickets sold so quickly that within 2 minutes of them going on sale there were no adjacent seats available so we sat 13 rows apart. The crowd was mostly a young party audience. My wife figured they were expecting a big wild Charlie Sheen bash and that’s not what it was. Charlie came with good, if not slightly delusional intentions of gaining grassroots support for his strange ways. The people around me were quite respectful and seemed to enjoy the show. The people near my wife were booing, fighting and getting kicked out of the theater. It was an entertaining evening.

Wade has a shot from Sheen’s show that you can see bigger and you can check out several more shots of Bob Seger in Grand Rapids from John!
